Ferenc Gróf – Zsófia Gyenes

‘The Last Night’ is a project by Ferenc Gróf and Zsófia Gyenes, taking as its starting point the final issue of the Budapest daily newspaper *Az Est* (‘The Night’), published on November 17, 1939. The demise of the paper was linked to the introduction of anti-Jewish laws, the onset of the World War, and the political transformation of the Hungarian public sphere. The project evokes this vanished publication through a temporary public gesture at a Budapest site historically connected to the newspaper. Centered on the inscription ‘The Last Est’—rendered in the style of the original masthead—the project includes a pocket-sized book and a series of public readings: the publication reproduces the full text of the final issue, which is then read aloud in its entirety by participants. For a brief moment, the work reactivates the voice of a lost public sphere, drawing attention to the historical and contemporary fragility of press freedom.
