Budapest is built of iron, too: rails, bridges, castings and machines that have been repaired, reused and reshaped for generations. Iron City follows this patched, still-working city. Starting from the former urban network of Ganz, it asks how the know-how of production, repair and maintenance lives on in today’s Budapest, and what it can teach us as the city has to adapt. Together with residents, we walk and map the traces, routes and connections of iron, past and present, to draw a new map of Budapest. The shared map comes to life as a public installation, giving a new, temporary function to a disused Ganz industrial site that is currently closed to the public.
